For the seventh year in a row, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake has received the Canadian Award for Financing Reporting for the year of 2017.

Lord Mayor Betty DIsero, joined by Coun. Wendy Cheropita, presented the certificate to Nick Alaimo, town’s deputy treasurer, and congratulated him and the corporate service department for receiving the federal award.

“We all worked together as a team. It’s a great honour to accept the award,” Alaimo told The Lake Report. “I think we’ve been improving and improving every year because they do provide feedback each year in terms of how we can improve.”

One of the challenges while preparing the report was staff resources, said Alaimo.

“Very proud of our finance staff,” Holly Dowd, the town’s chief administrative officer, said in an interview. “They worked very hard for this award... It’s been the seventh year and they’ve been able to uphold it each year.”

The Government Finance Officers Association established the award in 1986 to encourage and help municipalities to “go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles,” according to the association’s website.

Local governments submit their reports to the association, which are then reviewed by the association’s professional staff and review committee.

NOTL's annual financial reports can be found on the town’s website.
