Stabbing in Welland leads to arrest

A man was arrested Wednesday morning after assaulting a Welland resident with a knife.

At approximately 7:19 a.m., police were called to an apartment unit in downtown Welland for reports of a stabbing.

Police found the suspect had forced his way into the apartment, assaulted a 54-year-old and damaged furniture in the apartment with the knife.

The suspect fled on foot but was later located and arrested in a neighbouring apartment unit.

The injury to the victim was minor and medical attention was not required.

As a result, police have charged 40-year-old Peter Thomas of Welland with asssault with a weapon, forcible entry, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Thomas was in held custody in Niagara Falls to await a bail hearing as of Wednesday morning.
