Free yoga class offered at Queen's Royal Park this Saturday

For Baillie Thornhill, who will be hosting a free yoga class this Saturday at Queen’s Royal Park, yoga is more than poses and asanas – it is a lifestyle.

“I just like to move, to be agile and to be flexible in (my) body,” Thornhill said. “Yoga has a lot of other benefits: mentally, emotionally, spiritually as well as physically.”

The session, led by Thornhill in collaboration with Niagara Fit, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7. It will run from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. by the waterfront gazebo.

The class is open to everyone and any donations will go to Red Roof Retreat, a non-profit community organization in NOTL.

Smoothies will be provided by Jaclyn Willms and Dani Lepp of Niagara Fit. People can bring their own mats although Thornhill encourages people to practice barefoot.

“There’s a lot of science behind having your feet in the grass and grounding,” she said. “We wear shoes so much, a lot of our generation and society forget what’s like to have sprawling feet in the grass.”

Thornhill said she was introduced to yoga more than ten years ago. She did a yoga teaching training in Indonesia where she has lived for the past two years before moving to Virgil six weeks ago.

Saturday’s event will be a chance to introduce herself to the community and will also be a launching point as she’s planning to host weekly yoga classes at Niagara Fit in the near future, Thornhill said.
