Thanks to volunteers and community contributions, Newark Neighbours was able to donate $10,000 to Red Roof Retreat.

The cheque presentation took place Thursday at the Ranch on Concession 6 Road.

Red Roof’s executive director Steffanie Bjorgan said it was amazing how much money Newark Neighbours has raised.

“I’m so glad. And it’s charities helping charities which is amazing, too,” she said.

The donation came from the thrift store's July sales, said Newark’s chair Laura Gibson, adding the sales keep improving every year.

“I think last year was $7,000, so we made a real effort to make sure we really sell a lot of things in July so we can make a good contribution to Red Roof,” she said. “We’re just thrilled to be able to help them (Red Roof) because they do such a terrific job in the community,”

Newark’s volunteer Karen McLeod said the store is “really busy” right now with a lot of migrant workers coming in to buy something for their families before heading back home to Mexico or Jamaica in the next few weeks.

“It’s wonderful to see them shopping for their families,” said McLeod.

Migrant workers usually come in on Sundays when they have a day off, added Gibson, so Sundays “are really fun and, probably, the biggest sales day.”

Newark Neighbours is a food bank and a thrift store in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Red Roof Retreat is a charitable organization providing respite and recreational programs to children and youth with special needs and their families.
