Exploring photos with Jim Smith: Fred Curtis, another barber
Supplied photo. (Jim Smith/Niagara Now)

Fred Curtis was just one of three barbers we had on Queen Street.

In this 1946 painting by Betty Lane, Fred can be seen cutting a patron’s hair. As with all businesses on Queen Street, this one was family-owned. The family enterpreneurs either lived upstairs or in the back of their store, as did Fred Curtis. As seen in the picture, two dogs are running loose, which was quite lawful at the time, though dog dirt was evident on sidewalks and boulevards throughout the town.
