The new president of Niagara College, Sean Kennedy, has been a part of the college's senior management team since 2006.

The announcement of the college’s sixth president was met with loud cheers and applause from a crowd gathered at the Welland Campus Friday morning.

“He personifies our Niagara College DNA," said John Scott, chair of the college’s board of governors. "He’s welcoming, he’s very passionate, he’s a trailblazer. He’s fully dedicated to make sure this college continues to be and expands its focus on student centricity."

Kennedy, who lives in Fonthill with his wife Kerry, started working at the college as a vice-president of student and external relations and CEO of the Niagara College Foundation.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, Kennedy served as an interim vice-president, academic. In 2014, he started working as senior vice-president, international.

“This is the place that I love so dearly with the group of people I’m just so honoured to work with and have been honoured to work with, that I care so deeply about. And I’m so looking forward to continuing the success of Niagara College as your president,” Kennedy told the crowd.

The outgoing college president Dan Patterson announced his retirement in May 2019 after a 25-year tenure.

“I will always keep our students front of mind in leading this great college and work with Niagara College administrative council and great student leaders … to ensure our student voices are heard and considered. And that student experiences, learning and success remain focal point in everything that we do,” Kennedy said.
