NRPS: officer arrested for assault for a second time

A police officer with the Niagara Regional Police has been arrested again on charges of assault and suspended with pay in accordance with the Police Act.

Police issued a statement today saying one of their constables, Matthew Belzil, was arrested at approximately 4:45 p.m. Friday.

They said Belzil will be charged with the “alleged offences” of three counts of assault, two counts of uttering threats, two counts of mischief, and one count of sexual assault.

Belzil was also arrested in November of 2013 and charged on two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats.

Police said the incident occurred while Belzil was off-duty, but “as the matter is now before the courts, no further comment or details will be provided.”

His bail hearing will be held in the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 30, 2017, via a video link at the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton.

Belzil has been with the NRPS for 11 years, and is presently assigned to uniform patrol.
