POLICE: Seatbelt compliance initiative sees fines in Welland

Niagara Regional Police conducted a seatbelt compliance initiative in Welland on Monday, on Niagara St. at East Main St., as part of the 2018 Canada Road Safety Week campaign.

During the two-hour road safety initiative, officers checked around 175,200 motor vehicles. Despite the Ontario seatbelt law being over 42-years-old, nine drivers and one passenger were cited for not wearing their seatbelts, police said.

Traffic officers also issued an additional 9 tickets and 13 provincial offence warnings throughout the day, for various equipment and document violations and several speeding infractions.
